Lower Oak Bay Park is located near Port Hadlock, WA, featuring coastal terrain with access to the shoreline. The Best Camping Near Chimacum, Washington

This campground is made up of two parts, the upper and lower.  The lower campground is right on the beach.  No privacy and no trees, but crazy beautiful views!  The upper campground has several sites, most have plenty of privacy.  There are 3-4 sites with water views, those sites are less private but the pay off is a beautiful view!

Convenient location

We found this campground as a last resort, when everything else was full.  The view is great, looking out on the sound, with forested trees on the surrounding hills.  However, that's the best part.  The sites are poorly laid out, right on top of each other.  Our neighbors partied late, and their fireplace and table were less than 20 feet away from our trailer.  There is ZERO shade or anything to block you from the wind, which can get strong coming off the water.  There's a communal water tap and dumpsters for garbage, but the toilets are pit toilets (clean, but not flush). We enjoyed watching birds, the sunset and the stars, but I don't think we'd go back.

There are two sections to this small, tucked away campground on the edge of the Salish Sea, one in the forested area and another out on the beach spit. We camped along the spit, and had an amazing time. And even in the final days of summer, it was a lovely temperature to hang out for the week and we even got to see the Northern Lights one night!  One extra clear days, you can see Mt Rainier directly across the bay.  That incredible sight just never gets old.

  

The nearby towns of Port Townsend, Port Hadlock and Chimicum have most of the things you might be looking for in terms of groceries, eateries, and entertainment.  Definitely put Finn River Farm &amp; Cidery on your must-do list while you are here.  So much fun...great food, great cider, fun atmosphere, live music!

  

The sites down on the spit are first-come first-served, with 4 tightly packed together near the single vault toilet and fresh water tap, with several more further down the spit.  The sites all had a grassy spot, picnic table and fire ring.  As this is also a county park, there’s lots of vehicle and walking traffic but it is all deserted by sundown. It’s very quiet at night unless you have some rowdy neighbors, but we rarely had neighbors except on the weekend nights.  Met some nice locals who come to camp on weekends.

  

Across the canal there’s a naval armory which plays the National Anthem at 8 am and Taps at 8 pm, so enjoy that nice touch. We had great solar accessibility and phone service as well as an unobstructed view for satellite internet. Up in the forested campground (Upper Oak Bay) there is less solar access, and a lot more trees, but feel more like a campground.

  

This is a great tide pooling and bird watching area, with great opportunities to put the kayaks, or paddle boards in the water for a short trip. While street walking is easy here, situated in a residential area, more significant hiking is a drive away. We went to Fort Worden State Historic Park to get in some miles- lot’s of history there. Olympic National Park is also within an hour’s drive. Road cycling is pretty good in the area, but be aware of the narrow lanes and heavy traffic. We bounced over to Marrowstone Island to get away from traffic and have a wander by bike.

A Little Slice of Local Heaven Mostly to Ourselves!

This is a sweet little campground right on the bay. We were there in mid/late Sept and there was hardly anyone there, which made it so peaceful and quiet. People do come use the area for day use, but we were the only campers who stayed the night. There are only 8 sites, 5 at the entrance and 3 more at the end. There is zero privacy or any kind of separation between sites, it's almost like the county decided to convert a park to a campground. 

  

No reservations, fcfs only. Fee is $25 if you pay by cash or check at the Upper Bay campground, or if you pay onsite using the Park Mobile program there's an additional $2 fee. The only amenities here are trash, one water spigot, and a pit toilet. Verizon service was very weak and almost unusable and att was full bars 5g.

Beautiful bay view

Nice views and right on the water but each site is very small with a 30' total vehicle length limit. We had a 19' trailer and it was tight and had to park the truck crosswise. There is no separation between each site. Price was $30 per night plus a $2 service fee. No electrical hookups. Some other campers came in very late and did not pay. No one checked for payment. Overall felt a little sketchy.
